When the earthquake hit on January 12, 2010 there were approximately 200 hotel guests registered. Shift changes were about to take place so staff who would be leaving and those beginning their shifts would have been on the grounds.The Tuesday BBQ at 5 pm was about to begin. Visitors,registered guests and staff were beginning to gather under the huge mahogany tree in the middle of the compound. It is estimated there were approximately 300 people in the hotel at time of the earthquake.
Just two hours earlier, the weekly Air Canada flight from Montreal to Port au Prince landed. Those staying at Hotel Montana were registering at the desk when it hit or had gone to their rooms or to one of the bars to unwind after their flights.
Business men and women were attending meetings in the conference rooms. Others were using computers in the hotel lobby.
Students from Lynn University in Fla had just arrived back at the hotel from a day of visiting orphanages and schools. Seven of the students opted to hang out at the pool writing in their journals while seven went to their rooms to rest before dinner later. The two professors headed towards the gym for a workout.
Such a beautiful hotel with amazingly friendly staff. Each guest was made to feel as though they were Hotel Montana's favourite guest!!

It is tragic that the hotel, the people who worked there and guests, visitors etc died in this tragedy.
